Seaweed and Weight Loss - A Fiber in Sea Kelp Might Help People Lose Weight

Researchers from Newcastle University have discovered that alginate, a fiber found in seaweed, prevents up to 75 percent of the body’s uptake of fat, which is better than most weight loss treatments. As a result, attempts are being made to include alginate in other foods to help combat obesity, and clinical trials are underway to measure the impact of the seaweed fiber in a normal diet. Alginate has already been added to bread, and plans are in place for other frequently consumed foods like biscuits and yogurt.

The results of this research, which were presented at the American Chemical Society’s spring meeting in San Francisco, provide evidence of seaweed’s potential in weight loss. There are many other popular diet plans and weight loss products, but now seaweed is one of the few with science on its side.
